ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT OFFERS LESS INVASIVE PROCEDURE FOR VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins can be more than just unsightly, they can be very painful.

ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT OFFERS LESS INVASIVE PROCEDURE FOR VARICOSE VEINS

Health officials say varicose veins affect 50 percent of women and 40 percent of men.

Traditional treatment for varicose veins is invasive and recovery can take weeks. But endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) offers a less invasive procedure with less down time.

Endovenous laser treatments treat varicose veins using an optical fiber that is inserted into the vein to be treated. A laser light, normally in the infrared portion of the spectrum, shines into the interior of the vein. In the procedure the laser gets to the source of the damage and destroys the vein from the inside. There is no cutting and nothing is removed. The procedure takes less than one hour to perform.

A study by the Australian Medical Services Advisory Committee determined that endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins “appears to be more effective in the short term, and at least as effective overall, as the comparative procedure of junction ligation and vein stripping for the treatment of varicose veins.” The study of 516 patients treated veins over a 69 month period and reported a success rate of 98.1%.
